MY YOUNGEST SISTER WHO IS 16 YEARS OLD WROTE THIS STORY THAT MOVED ME TO TEARS..THE WAY SHE JUST APPROACHES THE CLIMAX… AM PROUD OF HER AND PRAY THAT GOD WILL CONTINUE BEING HER INSPIRATION. I FEEL CHALLENGED.. 🙂
Little Tommy was about 6years old when he got his nickname ,’little Tommy’ wasn’t his real name, not even close to what his mother named him but he always preferred little Tommy coz his mother named him Saul for one he never got to know the spelling of his name, he wondered if his name had an ‘o’ just as his pastor would pronounced his as he was preaching about Saul’s vices, but the pastor would never preach about the virtues that Saul had or did his name have ‘au’ just as his mother would write it down for him on a piece of paper every morning before dropping him off to school.
Everyone from the milk man to the shopkeeper to his aunt and even his best friend called him little Tommy all except his mother who still insisted on calling him Saul. Tommy never knew why they all called him little Tommy but he would always make up stories about a hero whose name was Tommy and would sometimes think that he was called Tommy coz he resembled his crazy uncle who always had it for the ladies. Tommy really never thought of his father maybe because he never thought that any of the men would fit as a father figure or because his mother never mentioned him at all. Every Sunday by the age of 10 little Tommy woke up early in the morning prepare breakfast for himself and his mother get ready to go to church and wait for his mother who would always accompany him to church as they narrated to each other stories of the people in the bible. His mother favorite was ‘the call of moses’ while her best bible verse was Jeremiah 29:11 and she would make tony recite it every morning.
‘For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord plans to prosper you and not to harm you plans to give hope and a future’
There was always something in the words written by Jeremiah that would always touch his soul while Tommy’s all time favorite was David’s defeat over Goliath, Tommy always found this particular story interesting and he would often find a stone to hit one of the watchmen but the result was always negative he would find himself always beaten up by the watchmen or his mother.
In church Tommy would always pray for everyone he had ever met even his pet named Joe and the strangers who asked his for directions. After the Sunday service he would always make sure he sang a song for the pastor to thank him for the sermon, he would give and he would later take his mother to work and go to his friends who played baseball every Sunday afternoon.
Kids never had a problem with him because after dropping his mum all kids would gather together and tell each other of the stories they heard in church and somehow little Tommy’s stories would always catch the attention of everyone there. Some kids called him golden tongue because of how he would talk about the characters of men and women in the bible and how God works in people’s lives. This
Little Tommy was one of those kids who talked to everyone and this bothered his mother who always kept her secrets to herself. Things started to look up for little Tommy and his mum after Bob walked into their lives. The drill was simple Tommy’s mum fell in love with Bob and after a few months the two got married and Tommy and his mum moved into a more friendly neighborhood but Tommy would always find his way back to his church and to the play ground playing his Sunday’s all time favorite game base ball. Although little Tommy moved a few blocks away he never forgot to pray for everyone he always prayed for, and just like any other marriage in the 1960’s Bob came home late and would get drunk but never would he lay a finger on little Tommy or his mother and Tommy finally found his favorite verse in the bible, Psalms 23:4
‘Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil for you are with me’
This bible verse would cheer Tommy up especially when he got hospitalized and the doctors told him that he had a brain tumor that had developed and grown with him for the past four years. The doctors never told him that he didn’t have much time in the world but little Tommy had already known this. He would always put on a smile as he recited Jeremiah 29:11 to his mum and every time he recited this verse tears would run down her cheeks and Tommy’s prayer changed. He never forgot to pray for everyone and he would thank God for the life and all the people God made him see, the joy he had shared with people around him and also the pain he felt every time he got hurt and before his treatment he would always recite his favorite bible verse in his heart, because the treatment was painful to be given to a young child like him.
It was on a chilly Sunday after little Tommy had watched a Sunday service through the television when his mother asked little Tommy to pray, Tommy sat upright on his bed, gave a comforting smile to his mother and began to pray.
‘Thank you Lord for the life you have given me, for the great and wonderful people I have met, and above all for a great and one of a kind mother you have given me, I pray that God will bless her ,my God I am praying that even though I will not be here with her you will protect her and give her happiness, even though I won’t be around, and lastly God THANK YOU FOR THE LIFE I HAVE LIVED.
As the nurse told little Tommy’s mother to let Tommy rest he then hugged his mother and whispered to her ears ‘Mum I love you and I will always be with you and never forget this,’ Tommy’s words gave his mother a new definition of faith as she walked out of her son’s hospital room leaving behind her bible in his room. At around 4:30 pm his mother got a phone call from the hospital telling her to go and see her son but she arrived a little too late. Little Tommy had gone to be with the Lord and in his arms was his mother’s bible opened with his favorite chapter: psalms 23
‘The Lord is my shepherd I have everything I need, he lets me rest in fields of green grass and leads me to quiet pulls of fresh water. He gives me new strength he guides me in the right paths as he has promised even if I go through the deepest darkness I will not be afraid, Lord, your shepherds’’ rod and staff protects me ,you prepare a banquet for where all my enemies can see me, you welcome me as an honored guest and fill my cup to the brim, I know that your goodness and love will be with me all my life: and your house will be my home as long as I live.’
At the end of the chapter Tommy had written a few words to his mum.
MUM I KNOW THAT YOU LOVE ME BUT GOD LOVES ME MORE SO I HAVE CHOSEN TO GO AND LIVE WITH GOD,PLEASE DON’T BE SAD BECAUSE I WILL ALWAYS WATCH OVER YOU AND BE WITH YOU IN ALL THAT YOU DO. LOVE LITTLE TOMMY (SAUL)
Little Tommy died at the age of 12 and his mother always kept reminding his friends that its not how long you have lived but what you have left in people’s heart.
